Lady Tremaine, married to Cinderella's father after the early passing of the mother of his daughter, treated Cinderella like a kitchen maid and focused all of her attention on her own two daughters, Anastasia and Drizella. After the passing of her father, Cinderella's cruel stepmother further abuses her, disrespecting and humiliating her out of spite for the previous treatment she had experienced by her husband. 

The stepmother here is again portrayed as a revengeful, cruel and selfish woman, incapable of love or empathy for another woman, jealous and manipulative.
